What is PSBMT?

The Philippine Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (PSBMT) is a non-stock, non-profit organization composed of Filipino specialist physicians who are duly-trained in the conduct of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). It was organized mainly to promote and develop the rational and evidence-based use of blood and marrow transplantation in the treatment of various hematologic and non-hematologic diseases in the Philippines. The society is recognized and accredited by the country’s Professional Regulations Commission and was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission last March 9, 2016.

Dr. Honorata Baylon

Founder

Dr. Jane Baylon pioneered hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in the Philippines with the first allogeneic HSCT done at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in 1990. She is the current Head of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Center of St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City and is also the Head of the Section of Hematology of the Department of Internal Medicine at the NKTI. She graduated from the College of Medicine of University of the Philippines (UP) and received her residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Hematology at the UP-Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Medical Center. She also took fellowship in Hematology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia. She further had her Clinical Fellowship in Blood and Marrow Transplantation at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, USA. She obtained her Master in Hospital Administration at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business. She is a fellow of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP), and was a past president of the Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (PSHBT) and the Philippine Blood Coordinating Council (PBCC). She currently represents the country in the Asia-Pacific Blood and Marrow Transplantation group (APBMT) as well as in the Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT).

Dr. Francisco Lopez

Founder

Dr. Francisco Lopez is a Hematologist and Medical Oncologist. He is currently the Head of the Stem Cell Center and the Section Head of Hematology of St. Luke’s Medical Center- Bonifacio Global City. He is likewise the Co-director of the Cellular Therapeutics Center and Head of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit of Makati Medical Center. He is also an active staff of Asian Hospital and Medical Center. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas. He finished his residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at The Miriam Hospital, Brown University School of Medicine. He then went on to complete his training in Bone Marrow Transplantation at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. Dr. Lopez is a member of the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He served as the Director of the Asian Hospital Charities, Inc., Chairman of the Core Group Publishing, Inc., and also as a consultant of the former Bureau of Food and Drugs. He is currently a board member of the Philippine Health Insurance, Inc.

Dr. Maria Luz del Rosario

Dr. del Rosario is Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist/Blood and Marrow Transplant physician affliated with several hospitals in Metro Manila. She is a graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. She trained in Pediatrics at both the UP-Philippine General Hospital and North Carolina Baptist Hospital. This wa followed by further training in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation at the University of Florida Health Science Center in Gainesville, Florida. Since returning to the Philippines, she has participated in performance several "firsts" in bone marrow transplantation in the country, such as pediatric transplant for severe combined immune deficiency syndrome, umbilical cord blood transplant for relapsed childhood acute myelogenous leukemia, and matched unrelated transplantation for relapsed leukemia. She is currently affiliated with St Luke's Medical Center-QC, Cardinal Santos Medical Center, The Medical City, Lung Center of the Philippines and Philippine Children's Medical Center. She is also a member of the Philippine Society of Pediatric Oncology, Philippine Society of Pediatric Hematology, Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Philippine Pediatric Society and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

Dr. Lynn Bonifacio

Founder

Dr. Bonifacio is currently a Medical Specialist I consultant under the Section of Hematology of the Department of Internal Medicine at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute and also at the UP-Philippine General Hospital. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at the College of Medicine of University of the Philippines. She graduated from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and had her residency training in Internal Medicine at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute. She took up Fellowship in Hematology at UP-PGH. She further had her Clinical Fellowship in Blood and Marrow Transplantation at the University Hospital Leipzig, in Germany. She is a fellow of the PCP and a diplomate of the PSHBT. Her other hospital affiliations include the Lung Center of the Philippines, the Philippine Heart Center and FEU-NRMF Hospital.

Founder

Dr. Racho is a Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist. He is currently the Section Chief of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City and in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. He is also a member of the Blood and Marrow and Transplant Team in both institutions. Dr. Racho had his Residency Training in Pediatric Medicine and Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center. He also trained in Clinical Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, USA. Dr. Racho is the current President, Philippine Society of Pediatric Hematology. He is also a Past President of the Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, and he is also a Diplomate of the Philippine Pediatric Society.

Roxan A. Perez is currently an Active consultant and Assistant Professor at FEU-NRMF Hospital. She is a product alumna of the same institution after finishing Doctor in Medicine and Residency in Internal Medicine. She took her Fellowship training in Adult Hematology at the University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital and had further training in Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cryopreservation at St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Australia. She is a fellow of the Philippine College of Physician and a diplomate of the Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. She's currently affiliated at National Kidney and Transplant Institute, Capitol Medical Center, Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Bingcang has clinical practice in Adult Benign and Malignant Hematology as well as Blood and Marrow Transplantation. Currently she practices and holds clinic at St. Luke’s Medical Center Quezon City and St. Luke’s Medical Center Global City. She received her medical degree from the West Visayas State University College of Medicine in Iloilo City and her Internship credentials at the St. Luke’s Medical Center Quezon City. She had her Internal Medicine Residency Training from The Doctors’ Hospital . Dr. Bingcang had her Fellowship Training in Adult Hematology at the St. Luke’s Medical Center Quezon City , followed by a Visiting MD training in Hematopoietic Stem Cell (Blood and Marrow) Transplantation at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle , U.S.A. After this she returned to Manila to become a member of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Team of the St. Luke’s Medical Center Quezon City . Dr. Bingcang ’s professional memberships include: Diplomate, Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion ; Fellow, Philippine College of Physicians; Member, Philippine Medical Association and Makati Medical Society .

Dr. Beatrice Tiangco

Founder

Dr. Tiangco has clinical practices in both Medical Oncology and Malignant Hematology. Currently she serves as Section Chief of Medical Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine at The Medical City in Pasig, as well as Assistant Director in The Medical City Cancer Center. Dr. Tiangco is also a Medical Specialist II Consultant and Section Chief of Medical Oncology at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute. She received her Medical Degree, her Internship credentials and had her Residency Training from UP College of Medicine and the UP-Philippine General Hospital. Dr. Tiangco had her Fellowship Training in Medical Oncology and Hematology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, followed by a Fellowship in Blood Banking, Transfusion and Coagulation Medicine at the Institute for Transfusion Medicine. After this she returned to Manila under the Balik Scientist Program of the Department of Science and Technology, hoping to be able to contribute to the initiation of Hematopoietic Transplants in this country. She then went for her Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of the Philippines. Dr. Tiangco’s professional memberships include: Fellow, Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion; Past President, Philippine Society of Medical Oncology; Fellow, Philippine College of Physicians; Lifetime Member, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society; and Lifetime Member, Society for Participatory Medicine. She is the Project Leader and Co-founder of the Cleofe M. Bacungan Servant Leadership Endowment Fund (CMBSLEF), a project to identify and mentor Servant Leaders in the Student Body of the Philippine Science High School System. Dr. Tiangco also created the Cancer Registry (CARE) Philippines, an Organization/Web-based Application—Nationwide Hospital-Based Cancer Registry System which encourages Patient Participation in the maintenance of their own Cancer Database.

Alma Reyes-Calavera, MD. finished residency and appointed Chief Resident at UERMMMCI. She finished Hematology fellowship at PGH 2012. 2013-2014, she trained at Chang Gung Medical Center for Bone Marrow Transplant. She's currently Asst. professor at UERMMMCI college of Medicine and an active consultant at UERMMMCI, The Medical City and VRP medical center.

Objectives

  • To maintain an organization of qualified and competent Filipino specialists in the field of BMT.
  • To promote the rational and evidence-based use of BMT in the treatment of various hematologic and non-hematologic diseases
  • To establish appropriate training program with a certification system in the field of BMT
  • To collaborate with various hematology and medical oncology training institutions within the country and help provide BMT training opportunities to their respective trainees
  • To promote the exchange of knowledge about BMT through continuing medical education, research and publication
  • To collaborate with patients and their families, various government and non-government organizations in order to improve care of patients requiring BMT
  • To steer the setting up of a national BMT recipient and outcome registry as well as a registry of blood and marrow stem cell donors.
  • To collaborate with international organizations related to blood and marrow transplantation.

Plan of Activities

  1. Assist interested hematologists and oncologists in getting HSCT training abroad.
  2. Actively participate in the annual meetings of the Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (PSHBT) and Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO).
  3. Develop HSCT educational materials for physicians and patients
  4. Hold workshops to develop the HSCT training curriculum and the certification methodology.
  5. Hold regular scientific congress such as: annual convention, round table discussions and research fora.
  6. Collaborate with the Philippine Health Insurance, Inc., (PHILHEALTH) and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to subsidize a portion of the cost of BMT.
  7. Collaborate with Department of Health (DOH), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA ) in writing the National Guideline for HSCT and the National Standards for the collection, processing, and infusion of hematopoietic stem cells
  8. Develop a format in reporting the annual transplant activities of the accredited BMT centers .
  9. Develop a national registry for unrelated hematopoietic stem cell donors.
